Twas The Night Before Pond Hockey

Well if you're reading this today (Thursday), it's actually two nights before Pond Hockey!  Thanks Katherina for being my guest blogger today.  Enjoy!

Twas the night before Pond Hockey, when all through the camp
Not a staff member was stirring, not even little Scamp
The hockey sticks were placed by the rink with care,
In hopes that Pond Hockey would soon be there;
The hockey players were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of slap shots, body checks, and trophies danced in their heads;
And John in his Blackhawks jersey, and Lane in his Calgary theme
Had just settled their quarrel about who had the best team
When out on the rinks there arose such a clatter,
They both sprang from their seats to see what was the matter.
Away to the Welcome Centre they flew like a speed skater
Tore open the doors and hopped in the Gator
The moon in the sky and the freshly fallen snow,
Gave the glows of midday to the rinks down below.
When to their wondering eyes did appear
But the quadboni running with no snow left to clear,
With drivers so bundled and quick
They knew in a moment it must be Rolf and Dylan his sidekick
More rapid than bunnies his shovelers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and directed them by name:
Now Cicelly!  Now, Feli!  Now Jonas and Sina!
On Jono!  On, Lukas!  On Wendell and Carolina!
To the side of rink one!  To the side of rink two!
Now shovel away!  Shovel away!  Shovel away!  Hop to!
As the snow in the midst of a winter blizzard flies,
And when they meet with the forest, fall to the ground;
So too that's where the ice makers can be found
Pulling hoses full of water, and a little Zamboni too -
With a mighty shout, Lane and John heard on the rinks
The laughing and working, and winter boot clinks.
As John and Lane turned the Gator around,
Bob rushed to croki curl with a bound.
He was dressed in full hockey gear, from his head to his toe,
And his clothes were all covered with dog hair and snow;
A frozen jug in his hand and a hockey stick he had slung on his back,
He slid the jug across the ice with a smack.
His eyes - how they twinkled!  His ice fishing jokes, how merry!
He called for Bev to come see his great shot
While Courtney and Autumn found the perfect hot chocolate spot;
Harold, Eden, and Luis practiced their reffing calls,
While Theo, Max, and Jonah decked out the dining halls,
And Ken and Sarah cooked and baked to feed ravenous appetites.
Down at the barn Katherina and Mikaela got the Clydesdales ready with care,
And back in the office Colleen prepared for the players who soon would be there.
The rinks were prepared, they were ready to go
While shovelers prayed that it would no longer snow.
Lane and John looked around at the works in awe,
Pleased with the way it came together, they let out a great whoop and yee-haw!
As the sun shone on the camp down below
It could be heard over the speakers, so everyone would know,
"Happy Pond Hockey to all, and to all a good game!"

Thanks for your continued support.

Is That Really Don Cherry?

2019 started off with a bang...well more of a ricocheting slap shot!  Our 10th Annual Pond Hockey was last Saturday, January 12.  As most of you know we have been experiencing a warmer than usual winter - which is making everyone happy right?  Well, mostly right.  The down side of warm weather?  Difficult ice making conditions!  However, the hard work of our staff paid off.  With only two weeks to go, the ice was in great shape - even though the warmer days meant we couldn't make ice after lunch.

Then with about a week to go before the big day I made the mistake of looking at the forecast for Saturday.  Plus 5!  Plus 5 is almost summer here in Alberta.  Plus 5 is a cause for celebration for most of us...but...ice melts at plus 5!  As we all know there is not much we can do about the forecast - except pray.  And pray I did!  The forecast for Saturday continued to look bleak (albeit wonderful at the same time) as the week moved on.  Wednesday - plus 7!  Thursday - plus 5 - OK I thought, we are moving in the right direction.  And then on Friday the forecast for Saturday was...wait for it...plus 9!  Are you kidding?  PLUS 9!  (Capitals were added for dramatic effect!)  I prayed, "Lord this is your Pond Hockey and your camp.  I pray for colder weather, but leave tomorrow in your hands."

Saturday morning dawned cloudy and cool.  Not super cold, but below freezing.  As players and guests arrived from the north, south, and east, they commented about the temperatures they encountered on the way to camp.  Many hit plus temperatures somewhere on their journey to Evergreen in those early morning hours!  What were we in for I wondered?  But the day continued to be cloudy and cool.  The ice was near perfect.  Was that chance or was that our awesome God allowing us to have perfect weather for Pond Hockey?  I'm going with our Awesome God!

It was a great day.  Ken and the kitchen gang put out the usual fare of savoury cuisine and we had about 260 people join us for sloppy joes at lunch.  Supper was this incredible BBQ chicken (thanks Fred!) and the dining hall was full with 175 people.  Don Cherry (who surprisingly enough looks a lot like Gery Schubert) was our special guest and guess who went home (the second year in a row) with the silent auctions world famous peanut butter pie from Linden!  Oh my lanta that pie schmeckt gut!

We had the largest number of kids join us for their "skills" competition, our wagon rides were full, and the District 5 Slugs (ask our board chair where the name came from) won the tournament for a record breaking fourth time!  Our top sponsored team, the Gem Generals, raised just over $6,000!  This is the second year in a row for the Generals.  Our total so far is in the $33,000 neighbourhood.  Funds are still trickling in and if you want to join the trickle helping us reach the goal of $40,000 that would be awesome!  Thanks so much for your participation as a donor, player, guest, staff member, or volunteer.

I invite you to join us this year as we continue to reach higher bringing the life changing Good News of Jesus Christ to the children, youth, and families of Alberta.  Join us in prayer.  Join us on site as a volunteer.  Join us by becoming a monthly donor.  God is truly at work in and through us!

Thanks for your continued support.

Czechmate

So lots of action on the homes this week.  Han and Peter are back working on the Red House stone.  They brought some propane, a heater and a fancy insulated tarp.  If you ever find yourself doing stone work in cold weather, remember - freezing and setting are not the same thing!  You're shooting for setting.  Our painters, Larry and Linda from Linden, continue to paint the Green House and Bob (what a great name!) has joined us in staining the mantle and stair railing in both homes.  Bob is from right around the corner and attends the Bergen church.  Its good to have local support!

The basements are coming along, our plumbers are very close to having the hot water connected.  Poly and final insulation went up in both the Red and Green house basement walls and our electricians were back finishing the Red House.  Next week is scheduled to be just as busy.  Still no official move in date from Craig, but we're getting pretty excited!

The blog word of the week is check.  Or is it cheque?  Or maybe Czech?

I used the word check once back in grade four when I said checkmate as the Grandmaster of the tournament.  To be fair the tournament only had about three students and I'm not sure who was more surprised with the result, myself or Steven Collins.  I haven't really play chess since grade four as I wanted to retire a champion.  According to Google, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain.  Once achieved, the title is held for life!  I'll try to beat Scamp next time I play.

Or you could spell it cheque which is a great segway into asking you to consider helping us finish the year strong financially.  Our operating budget calls for $50,000 to be donated by churches and individuals in the months of November and December.  We had a few unexpected expenses this year in the way of furnaces and hot water systems, your support would be greatly appreciated as we continue to reach higher!

We could also mention check in the context of our upcoming Pond Hockey tournament Saturday, January 13th.  (Good thing its not on Friday the 13th!)  Using the word check is a little misleading as usually we're interested more about what kind of cheese the players like (cheese is a typical topic when Tom announces the game) as opposed to how well they can body check - as we try to keep checking to a minimum.  Two of our board members Eric and Cody missed the memo!

And finally, we can use the word Czech very effectively to tell a (very funny) story.

Hey Chad, Kenya see who's winning the race?  Iran up to Czech but couldn't see anything.  It looks like those two are Russian to the Finnish line.  I think it's gonna be...a Thai!

Thanks for your ongoing support!

Are You Sitting Down...

If you're not sitting down you might want to for this weeks blog.  Starting last Saturday it was a very busy week here at Evergreen.  In case you missed it, Saturday was our annual Pond Hockey Tournament and we raised $30,000!  A big shout out to all who participated, volunteered, played and donated.  Craig Wiens and his Dalhousie Divers won the coveted top fundraiser trophy and took home this years prize, the Evergreen hockey jersey.

Lots (and by lots I really mean LOTS!) of action on the house build this week.  Our plumber started plumbing, the windows and doors went in and we now have up and down stairs to the basement.  And if that is not enough, we need to talk about the tin roof action.  By tin roof we're not talking tin roof sundae ice cream - which by the way tastes very good!  (tin roof is one of my favourite flavours in case you ever take me out for ice cream...)

The tin roof we're talking about is our first house!  Through one of our Gem MB Church connections, Norseman Metal Supply not only supplied the tin and installed the tin, they did this at no cost to camp!  (that's why you should be sitting down!)  A HUGE thanks to Ron and the rest of his team out of Duchess.  Ron brought with him Chapo, Jacob, Alex and his son Brock - who at age five - was picking up scrap pieces of tin for his dad!  Gem MB Church supplied some extra hands: Andrew, Dylan, Peter, Richard and Ethan - thanks for coming, it was great to see you here.  You will recognize Richard and Ethan.  This was their third time volunteering as father and son.

Craig, Jordan and Gary were here Friday making sure things are in place for our plumber who is coming back Monday.  Gary moved the laundry room door over a couple of inches.  Jordan was busy with I P D (has nothing to do with an internal police department) at the fireplace.  Craig did finally realize after a moment of reflection that the tub didn't go in the middle of the bedroom.  Good thing Kevin was here!  Apparently he was just measuring in the middle of the bedroom.  (measure once cut twice as the saying goes :))

And if that wasn't enough, the highlight for me this week was when two of our campers made a donation for Reaching Higher.  Can we stop and talk about that for a moment.   Two campers, at a young age, on their own initiative, donated a significant amount of their own money towards camp.  It makes me incredibly proud and humble to be part of this ministry.  It also challenges me and motivates me in my own support of Evergreen.

What's next?  Its time to start thinking about drywall, flooring, painting and appliances.  If you or someone you know has some good connections please let us know!

Thanks again for your continued support as we reach higher to see more lives transformed by the power of Jesus!
